FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows a person to transfer files between two computers, generally connected via the Internet. A browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, can use FTP.

Graphical FTP clients often display two panels, one representing your local hard disk and the other representing the remote server. “Upload” generally means moving the file from your local machine to the remote server; “Download” generally means moving the file from the remote server to your local machine. FTP is widely used by Website design program like Front Page to upload web page changes to your hosting company web server.
